Sustainable Santa Fe Plan
Image of Sustainable Santa Fe Plan cover
The Sustainable Santa Fe Plan outlines the City's program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to make the community more resilient to weather the changes that are inevitble from global warming in increased energy costs.  Developed in response to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which the City adopted in 2006, this plan seeks to both reduce the City's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and to prepare the City to be resilient to the effects of both climate change and peak oil.

The Annual Progress Report for the year 2010 provides information on how the progress towards completing action items included in the plan.

If you have questions about the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan or implementation of any of its sections, please contact Katherine Mortimer.

Sustainable Santa Fe Commission and Youth Advisory Board
The Santa Fe City Council recommissioned the Sustainable Santa Fe Commission in April 2006 and charged them with drafing the Sustainable Santa Fe Plan.  A Youth Advisory Board was formed in 2008 to include a youth voice in the work of the Commission.  The Sustainable Santa Fe Plan was adopted in October 2008, The plan addresses reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the community and making the community more resilient to respond to climate change and peak oil.  The current status of the Plan's implementation is described in the 2011 Update.

The Commission formed sub-committes to address a range of issues that address both of these goals.  Additionally, the Council works with other City committees engaged in work within the scope of the plan including the City's Water Conservation Committee and the City and County Advisory Council on Food Policy

The Council also partners with local non-profits engaged in supportive activities including working with the Santa Fe Area Home Builder's Association on residential green building codes and the Santa Fe Community College's Sustainable Technologies Center on ensuring opportunities for training for emerging green busines and employment opportunities.

The Sustainable Santa Fe Commission is one of the partner groups for an Americorps Grant that is hosting 13 young people working on food access and justice issues within the City and County lead by the local non-profit Earth Care.  The Youth Food Cadre are working on a broad range of education and support for local food initiatives.

Santa Fe Joins the Western Climate Change Adaptation Alliance
The City of Santa Fe jointed the Western Climate Change Adaptation Alliance (the Alliance) at the Urban Sustainability Directors Network in Portland, Oregon in October 2012.  WAA is a "learning network" of 11 local governments across five states in the inter-mountain west self-organized to collaborate on the increasingly urgent challenge of preparing urban areas in arid/semi-arid environments for the impacts of climate change.  The Alliance is engaged in a parntership with the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC) in this effort.  Together we are evaluating and addressing the impacts of climate change unique to the arid inter-mountain west to develop resilience to the local and regional impacts of climate distruption.

Residential Green Building Code
The City of Santa Fe City Residential Green Building Code applies to a new single-family residential structures, both attached and detached, including guest houses.

The Code follows a similar format as the National Green Building Standard to facilitate the process for those taking the New Mexico State Sustainable Building Tax Credit, and to focus efforts on those that directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions or water use.
